GCC Secretary-General Welcomes Yemen Detainee Exchange Agreement
Riyadh, May 15 (QNA) - GCC Secretary-General has welcomed an agreement reached on the exchange of detainees in Yemen as an important humanitarian step towards easing the country's prolonged conflict.
In a statement, Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi praised Jordan for hosting the negotiations, as well as the efforts of the United Nations' Special Envoy to Yemen and the International Committee of the Red Cross in helping secure the agreement.
He said the detainee exchange represented a positive development that could help alleviate humanitarian suffering in Yemen and build confidence between the country's rival parties.
The GCC secretary-general reiterated the bloc's support for regional and international efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting political solution to the Yemeni crisis.
He stressed that any settlement should be based on what are known as the three agreed references: the Gulf Initiative and its implementation mechanism, the outcomes of Yemen's National Dialogue Conference, and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216.
Yemen has remained embroiled in conflict for years, creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions of people dependent on aid and large parts of the country devastated by fighting.
Diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting peace have intensified in recent months amid renewed international pressure for a negotiated settlement. (QNA)
