Cairo, September 21 (QNA) - The Arab League's General Secretariatآ has strongly condemned the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque by an Israeli official together with a group of settlers, under the protection of occupation forces.
In a statement issued Monday, the General Secretariat affirmed its rejection of the violation of the sanctity of Al Aqsa Mosque and Islamic holy sites, and any attempt to alter the existing historical and legal status quo.
It stressed the importance of respecting the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
The General Secretariat also condemned the continued incursions, raids, and detentions carried out in Palestinian cities and towns, as well as the arrests, searches, destruction of homes, and assaults against Palestinians in the town of Biddu, northwest of Jerusalem.
Such practices constitute a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law and international humanitarian law, it noted.
The General Secretariat further affirmed its rejection of the closure of the Al Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron to Muslim worshipers and the prevention of the call to prayer, as well as any measures that infringe upon freedom of worship or seek to alter the status of holy sites.
It called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to assume its responsibilities, halt these violations, provide protection for the Palestinian people and their holy sites, and preserve the existing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem, thereby preventing escalation and promoting stability and a just, comprehensive peace.
