Qatar Set to Host 10th FISU World University Weightlifting Championships - Doha 2026
Doha, September 02 (QNA) - Qatar is set to host the 10th edition of 2026 FISU World University Weightlifting Championships from Sept. 8 to 12.
The marquee international sporting event will further cement Doha's status as a global sports capital.
Organized by the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF) under the umbrella of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the championships will bring together federations and universities from around the globe.
The Doha edition takes on special significance as the previous edition was staged in 2018, before the tournament was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the multi-year global sporting calendar.
The championships will bring together 116 male and female weightlifters representing 21 countries from around the globe, competing in eight men's and eight women's weight classes in highly anticipated contests expected to deliver fierce and thrilling competition.
The field includes several athletes who compete at the international level and represent their national teams at continental and world championships, underscoring the high-caliber field and elite level of competition.
The championships will be held at the Education City Student Center Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, under a robust organizational framework that meets the highest global standards and provides an ideal environment for athletes and participating delegations at both the coaching and organizational levels.
The championships will mark the second global event organized by the QCSF since its official launch in 2023, following its hosting of the FISU University World Cup 3x3 Basketball.
Ahead of this critical event, the organizing committee is slated to hold a press conference Sunday, Sept. 6, to unveil the latest technical details and finalize the arrangements, with officials from both the QCSF and FISU in attendance, alongside sustainability and sponsorship partners.
The official inauguration ceremony for the tournament will take place Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, marking the commencement of the five-day official competitions to crown the 2026 World University champions.
The championship is anticipated to receive significant media traction, while the detailed schedule for the competitions and related events will be announced in stages in the coming period. (QNA)
