Manama, September 02 (QNA) - Bahrain strongly condemned and denounced the Iranian attack on the Saudi oil tanker "Sidr" while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in the death of two Filipino sailors.
In a statement Wednesday, the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack constitutes a serious threat to the security and safety of maritime navigation and the freedom of movement of commercial vessels, and a blatant violation of international law, the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2817, and the resolutions of the International Maritime Organization.
The Ministry also expressed Bahrain's full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its complete support for all measures taken by the Kingdom to safeguard its security, the safety of its citizens and its vital interests.
Bahrain renewed its call on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities and take the necessary measures to halt Iranian attacks that threaten the security and safety of maritime navigation and freedom of passage through the Strait of Hormuz and other international waterways.
It also called for enhanced regional and international cooperation and coordination, including joint efforts to remove mines and maritime hazards, to protect vessels and their crews, ensure the freedom and smooth flow of trade and energy, and promote security and stability in the region. (QNA)
