Islamabad, August 26 (QNA) - At least 12 newborns were killed after a fire broke out Wednesday morning in the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in the capital Islamabad, local media and officials said.
The fire broke out in the hospital's mother and child health ward, according to local broadcaster Geo TV. The nursery housed 16 newborns at the time, of whom only one was rescued, the broadcaster reported. 
Rescue officials said the blaze appeared to have started after an air-conditioning compressor exploded inside the nursery. Firefighters brought the blaze under control and carried out cooling operations at the site, according to local reports. 
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and called for those responsible to be held accountable, according to his office. (QNA)
