2026 World Cup: Javier Aguirre Steps Down as Mexico Coach After Round of 16 Exit
Mexico City, July 06 (QNA) - Javier Aguirre resigned as head coach of the Mexico national football team after its 3-2 loss to England in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Aguirre's resignation followed Mexico's earlier-than-expected elimination from the tournament, a result widely viewed as falling short of supporters' expectations. Despite England playing with 10 men, Mexico was unable to capitalize, and Aguirre took responsibility for the team's exit, bringing his third spell in charge of the national team to an end.
The 67-year-old returned as Mexico coach in July 2024 after previously managing the national team in two separate stints.
Rafael Marquez, who has served on the coaching staff for the past two years, is expected to succeed Aguirre as head coach, reflecting the Mexican Football Federation's emphasis on continuity and the start of a new phase for the national team. (QNA)
