UN: Gaza Airstrikes Leave Thousands with Severe Hearing Impairments
New York, June 27 (QNA) - Tens of thousands of Gazans have been affected by auditory impairments due to repeated explosions resulting from the Israeli occupation's aerial offensives across the enclave since October 2023, the United Nations has revealed.
In a report to mark the International Day of Deafblindness, which annually falls on June 27, the UN indicated that many Gazans with disabilities have lost their ancillary devices, including wheelchairs and hearing aids.
The war on Gaza has compounded the vulnerability of this category, the statement reads, pointing out that there are people who could barely hear the evacuation orders and could neither see the road when they venture out either.
It added that these categories are either unable to move without help, making them vulnerable to a double risk in an environment where risk and displacement zones are rapidly amorphous.
The statement further noted that the vast majority of Gazans are still facing perpetual insecurity and displacement with limited access to fundamental services.
It warned that displacement sites are bursting at the seams, along with damaged buildings and temporary shelters that literally lack adequate water, sanitation, and protection, thereby further making the lives of those disabled people more complex and riskier.
For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that around 43,000 people injured in the Gaza Strip have sustained life-changing injuries since October 2023, adding that more than 50,000 conflict-related injuries require long-term rehabilitation.
The organization added that the injuries include limb amputations, spinal cord injuries, major burns, traumatic brain injuries, and complex fractures.
WHO further contended that rehabilitation facilities in Gaza are not fully operational and that rehabilitation equipment and assistive products are not entering the territory in sufficient quantities to meet growing demand. (QNA)
