Vancouver, June 14 (QNA) - Australia began its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with a 2–0 victory over Turkiye in their Group D match at آ BC Place Vancouver, Canada.
Australia scored in the 26th minute through Nestory Irankunda who give his side an early advantage.
In the second half, Australia continued to dominate and doubled its lead in the 75th minute through Connor Metcalfe, securing its first three points of the tournament.
Turkiye attempted to get back into the match, enjoying periods of possession, but Australia's organized defense prevented them from creating any real threat on goal, and the game ended 2-0 in Australia's favor.
With this victory, Australia collected its first three points in Group D, boosting its chances of securing one of the two qualification spots for the next round. Turkiye, meanwhile, remained without a point and will look to its upcoming matches to revive its campaign.
In the second round of fixtures, Australia will face the United States on June 19, while Turkiye will take on Paraguay in an important encounter as it seeks to recover from its opening defeat and keep its hopes of advancing alive. (QNA)
