Cairo, May 07 (QNA) - Qatar's junior weightlifting team delivered a strong performance at the World Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Ismailia, Egypt, featuring 270 athletes from 53 countries.
Qatari lifter Fares Ahmed Jaber achieved new personal bests in the under-20 110kg category, lifting 156kg in the snatch and 206kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 362kg.
Another Qatari athlete, Nader Mohammed Bakr, competed in the 94kg division as part of the federation's youth development program aimed at increasing international experience.
On the sidelines of the event, HE Mohammed bin Yousef Al Mana, first vice-president of the Qatar Olympic Committee and president of both the Qatari and Arab Weightlifting Federations, was honored by Egypt's Rawabet Sports Company in recognition of his contribution to the development of the sport.
Al Mana said the recognition reflected the collective efforts being made to advance weightlifting internationally, adding that greater co-operation between continental and national federations was essential to sustaining the sport's development.
He said Arab and Asian federations were placing particular emphasis on youth development through training programs, overseas camps and international competition opportunities aimed at preparing a new generation of athletes capable of competing at the highest level.
Meanwhile, Jassim Ibrahim Al Mansouri, secretary-general of the Qatar Weightlifting Federation, said the team's participation formed part of a broader strategy to build a generation capable of competing internationally.
He added that the achievements recorded by Fares Jaber demonstrated the progress being made within Qatar's technical training system and youth development program. (QNA)
