Doha, May 14 (QNA) - The Archaeology Department at Qatar Museums (QM) organized an introductory event today at Qatar National Theatre under the title "Presentation of Achievements and Future Directions." The event brought together a distinguished group of experts and researchers specializing in archaeology at Qatar Museums.
The event, attended by Director of the National Museum of Qatar, HE Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Hamad Al-Thani along with officials from various government sectors and academics, was held in celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, observed annually on April 18.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Director of the Archaeology Department at Qatar Museums, Faisal Abdullah Al Nuaimi said the event is being organized for the second consecutive year to highlight the department's key scientific activities, showcase the latest discoveries and research projects, and shed light on efforts to preserve Qatar's cultural heritage. He added that the gathering also serves as a platform for discussion and knowledge exchange among specialists and those interested in archaeology.
Al Nuaimi revealed that the department's future projects are focused on linking historical periods from prehistory through successive eras, emphasizing the importance of archaeology in preserving the memory of place, connecting the past with the present, and helping shape perspectives for the future.
Addressing the department's priorities and whether its focus lies on terrestrial or maritime archaeology, Al Nuaimi explained that land-based archaeological work is generally more manageable from both logistical and scientific perspectives. Fieldwork in desert environments, he noted, is often more stable, secure, and accessible for excavation and study.
He pointed out, however, that maritime archaeology presents greater technical complexity, as work at sea requires specialized equipment, precise operational mechanisms, and the ability to overcome the challenges posed by marine environments.
Al Nuaimi stressed that the sea is deeply intertwined with the history of human settlement in Qatar, as communities relied on it for centuries for fishing, pearl diving, and maritime trade. He noted that recent findings indicate some discovered underwater sites date back to relatively later periods.
"At the same time," he said, "there are also much older sites in the north and other parts of the country, reflecting the significant chronological diversity of Qatar's archaeological heritage."
He concluded that both terrestrial and maritime archaeology are equally important and constitute essential parts of Qatar's history and cultural identity. Nevertheless, maritime archaeology currently requires greater attention due to the advanced technical and research capabilities it demands, as well as the many secrets that remain undiscovered beneath the sea.
Experts and researchers participating in the event emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts in archaeological research, surveying, excavation, documentation, and the preservation of Qatar's cultural heritage.
They also reviewed major achievements and field and research projects on land and at sea, highlighting the diversity of archaeological work and the integration of scientific, technical, and field efforts aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations.
During the first session, Dr. Wafaa Suleiman, an expert in underwater cultural heritage at Qatar Museums, presented the preliminary findings of the archaeological marine survey conducted off the coast of Al Ruwais. Dr. Farhan Skl, an archaeology expert, delivered a presentation on the current activities of the Excavation and Site Management Section, while Al Anoud Al Mutawa presented a paper on the sorting and documentation of artifacts from the Freiha site.
Dr. Robert Carter, an archaeology expert, also discussed the latest excavation results from Early Islamic period sites in northern Qatar, a project partially funded by entities within the country.
During the second and third sessions, Dr. Mostafa Azmi, archaeology expert, presented a lecture titled "Al Jassasiya Rock Carvings: Diversity, Richness, and Challenges of Preservation."  Margaux Dubau led attendees through a presentation on archaeological science activities, while Farid Al Shishani discussed "Heritage Preservation in Practice: Enhancing Access, Understanding, and Sustainability of Archaeological Collections." Aisha Mubarak Al Hamad also offered attendees insight into "A Day in the Life of an Inspector."
Dr. Sinan Al Nuaimi presented a paper entitled "Documentation of the Islamic Cemetery at Fahd bin Ali Palace," while the sessions concluded with a presentation by archaeology researcher Emad Tabhout on "Preventive Archaeological Surveys and Test Excavations at the Jubeijib Site: A Study Within the Dukhan Solar Power Project." Noura Al Humaidi, Head of the Survey and Research Section at the Archaeology Department, delivered the closing remarks.
The Archaeology Department at Qatar Museums is responsible for the protection, preservation, and documentation of the country's cultural heritage and archaeological sites. The department conducts excavation projects and archaeological research, promotes preventive archaeology, and raises public awareness of discoveries through partnerships and public lectures. It also oversees the documentation and management of underwater and terrestrial archaeological sites, including efforts to protect submerged cultural heritage and carry out field archaeological surveys.
