Filmmakers Praise Qumra 2026 for Boosting Emerging Voices
Doha, April 02 (QNA) - Several Arab and international filmmakers participating in Qumra Film 2026, organized by the Doha Film Institute, stressed the forum's critical role in nurturing new cinematic voices.
In a virtual meeting, they praised the support provided to filmmakers throughout all stages of production, from script writing to the final screening.
The 12th edition of Qumra, which began on March 27 and runs until April 8, offers development and networking opportunities for 49 projects from over 39 countries.
Despite recent regional tensions, the forum was held online to ensure the safety of participants and project teams.
Directors provided insights into their works, some still in development, others nearing completion.
They emphasized to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that Qumra's support goes beyond financial assistance, offering technical guidance, mentorship, and access to carefully selected industry experts.
Director of "Memorandum of Understanding" Ali Madi Alhajri noted that the desire to create films and consistent effort are essential, while institutions like Qumra open doors for emerging talents.
Director of "Light to Ashes" Nadia Al Khater highlighted the unique value of technical support, mentorship, and expert guidance provided by Qumra, which she said is rarely available elsewhere.
Hamad Al Hajri, director of "When The News Breaks You" with a co-production with Qatar, Palestine, Greece, Lebanon, and Turkiye, said his film explores the struggles of Arab journalists, especially in Gaza, while showcasing their professionalism.
He acknowledged Qumra's support alongside Katara Studios and the Al Jazeera Public Liberties and Human Rights Centre.
French-Moroccan director Yassine Ouahrani, creator of "Where the Sun Never Sets"(Morocco/France/Qatar), praised Qumra's global influence and its commitment to fostering emerging voices despite current challenges.
Qumra remains the region's longest-running film initiative, supporting first- and second-time filmmakers by providing mentorship, industry access, and creative development.
The 2026 projects reflect a rich diversity of stories, from personal narratives to explorations of history, mythology, and identity, across feature films, shorts, TV series, and web series.
The forum continues to play a pivotal role in connecting new filmmakers from Qatar, the region, and beyond with industry experts, ensuring their projects benefit from guidance and support at every stage of production. (QNA)
