New York, April 19 (QNA) - The United Nations strongly condemned the attack that resulted in the death of a French soldier from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the injury of three others during an incident that occurred yesterday, Saturday, in southern Lebanon.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press statement that this incident marks the third in recent weeks to result in fatalities among UNIFIL forces, despite a cessation of hostilities that came into effect on the 16th of this month for a period of ten days.
The statement conveyed the Secretary-General's call on all parties to adhere to the ceasefire, respect international law, and ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property at all times, stressing the need to halt attacks targeting peacekeeping forces.
It also noted that these assaults constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes, underscoring the importance of conducting prompt investigations and holding those responsible accountable.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed his appreciation for the efforts of UNIFIL personnel, emphasizing the need to guarantee their safety, security, and freedom of movement while carrying out their duties. (QNA)
