European Commission: EURO 3 Billion Extra Energy Costs Due to Middle East War
Brussels, March 11 (QNA) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that 10 days of war in the Middle East have cost European taxpayers an additional EURO 3 billion in fossil fuel imports, noting a 50% increase in gas prices and a 27% increase in oil prices.
In a speech to the European Parliament Wednesday regarding the economic repercussions of the Middle East conflict on Europeans, von der Leyen explained that the Commission is currently evaluating additional measures to reduce energy bills, including imposing a price cap on gas.
She affirmed that the European Commission's efforts to diversify fossil fuel suppliers have helped mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict, emphasizing that this does not mean Europe is immune to price fluctuations. (QNA)
