Qatar National Team Coach to QNA: Zimbabwe Friendly Was Valuable Regardless of Loss
Doha, November 18 (QNA) - Julen Lopetegui, coach of the Qatari national football team, said that the friendly played against Zimbabwe was valuable regardless of the loss, as it helps in future matches, most notably the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 in December.
Lopetegui stated to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the team is for sure unhappy with the result, but are aware that it is only a small part of the journey ahead.
He explained they aimed to give chances to more players to have a better understanding of their ability, especially the new ones.
Lopetegui said that he preferred to play only one international friendly this month and that the team will continue preparations following the end of the tenth round of Qatar Stars League (Doha Bank Stars League), as well as with the return of some players who are playing for Al Sadd, Al Duhail, and Al Gharafa in the AFC Champions League Elite.
He added that the team aims to compete fiercely and leave a notable mark in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 next month.
The Spaniard coach concluded his statements to QNA, affirming that he will continue his efforts and place a plan that would best prepare the team for the upcoming matches.
Lopetegui took over the role last May. He played his first match in June 2025 against Iran and then managed to lead the team in securing a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 by tying with Oman and beating the United Arab Emirates. (QNA)
