Hamburg, June 23 (QNA) - China's "LineShine" supercomputer has topped the global list of the world's most powerful high-performance computing systems, highlighting the country's advances in developing cutting-edge computing technologies using domestically produced components.

The system ranked first in the TOP500 list, which was unveiled at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Hamburg, Germany. Located in Shenzhen, southern China, "LineShine" achieved a sustained performance of 2.2 exaflops, a unit measuring the number of calculations a computer can perform per second.

It is notable for being entirely built with Chinese-made processors instead of the U.S. chips commonly used in advanced systems worldwide.

This marks the first time since 2017 that a Chinese supercomputer has topped the biannual TOP500 ranking, which has been published since 1993 and is widely regarded as an informal benchmark of global computing power.

"LineShine" displaced the previous leader, the U.S.-based "El Capitan" system, which is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy and now ranks second.

The United States still holds three of the top four positions in the ranking, with "El Capitan" at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California maintaining second place. Among European systems, Germany's "Jupiter Booster" also ranked within the top five. (QNA)
