New York, September 22 (QNA) - UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman has called on the Security Council to fulfill its responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
Speaking at the opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly in New York, Rahman said the Council needed to become more representative and transparent, reflecting current geopolitical realities, particularly through greater representation for Africa.
He also urged UN member states to pursue broader reforms of the organization, including reviewing thousands of existing mandates, strengthening operations at country level and ensuring the UN's financial sustainability and accountability.
Rahman said the UN remained indispensable despite growing challenges and declining public confidence. (QNA)
