QGOSM Celebrates World Metrology Day
Doha, May 20 (QNA) - Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QGOSM) joined its global counterparts in celebrating World Metrology Day, which falls on May 20 of every year, under the theme 'Measurements for all times, for all people,' for 2025.
On this occasion, HE Chairperson of QGOSM Eng. Mohammed bin Saud Mohammed Al Musallam said that this year's celebration theme represents a fundamental message embodying the role of measurement in achieving social and economic justice and transparency and achieving sustainable development goals, pointing out that accurate measurements are not limited to laboratories and factories, but rather affect everyday life by ensuring the quality of food and water, the safety of medicines, energy efficiency, and the reliability of commercial transactions.
In a joint speech, Director of the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) Anthony Donnellan and Director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) Dr. Martin Milton highlighted this year's particular significance, considering that it marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention and the founding of the BIPM.
They pointed out the achievements made over the past century and a half, expressing their anticipation for the opportunities and challenges that global measurement systems may face in the future. They also emphasized that measurement is an essential element in all aspects of human life.
By the 20th century, the Bureau continued its mission of developing specifications for measuring temperature, light and electricity, Donnellan and Dr. Milton noted, pointing out the new vision that emerged at the beginning of the 21st century, which lies in making the International System of Units (SI) based on the fundamental constants of nature, paving the way for the emergence of quantitative measurement.
The also pointed out that, with the availability of precise specifications for various types of measurement and the development of science and industry, the need for internationally agreed-upon specifications has increased, indicating that the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) was established in 1955 to facilitate the incorporation of measurement specifications into national laws and regulations, to ensure the unified use of measuring instruments.
