Berlin, April 18 (QNA) - North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General, Mark Rutte said that the United States' withdrawal from NATO is unlikely, stressing that Washington's security commitment to Europe remains intact.

In a press statement, Rutte said that the American nuclear umbrella is the ultimate guarantor of security in Europe and expressed his conviction that it will remain as such.

This comes after weeks of speculation that followed US President Donald Trump's remarks in which he had hinted at the possibility of the US reconsidering its commitment to the alliance, given the insufficient support shown by some NATO partners, particularly in the war against Iran.

Rutte added that any US withdrawal from NATO would require the approval of a two-thirds majority in the United States Senate, which is highly unlikely.

During his meeting with the US President at the White House earlier this month, Rutte had sensed President Trump's clear disappointment with NATO and a number of partner countries, noted the NATO Secretary General.

Points of disagreement include issues related to the use of military bases, as well as the mission of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Rutte added.

The NATO Secretary General said that he understands President Trump's position and frustration.

Regarding strengthening defense capabilities, Rutte called on European states to develop their defense industries, stressing that this move is crucial to maintaining defense and deterrence.

He also emphasized the importance of upholding NATO unity in the face of increasing security challenges, reaffirming the United States' continued role as a cornerstone of European security. (QNA)
