Kathmandu, September 04 (QNA) - Floods that struck Nepal last month caused at least NPR 387.5 billion (USD 2.56 billion) in damage to property, homes and infrastructure.

In this context, Chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority Dharma Raj Upreti said the estimated cost of building roads and temporary shelters, providing drinking water and restoring electricity during the first four months of the early recovery phase would amount to around USD 52.6 million.

Upreti added that these figures were estimates, highlighting that they had been calculated in coordination with the various relevant agencies and departments and that a detailed assessment would be conducted at a later stage.

He also said that Nepal would need to rebuild around 20,000 homes in the affected areas, noting that the floods had destroyed at least 7,500 homes.

An avalanche sent a torrent of ice, rocks and mud through the Trishuli River in the border region between Nepal and China on Aug. 26, crushing towns and villages and killing more than 1,250 people. More than 4,200 others remain missing, while thousands have been displaced. (QNA)
