Seoul, September 04 (QNA) - The Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the HUSS Environmental Consortium in South Korea, establishing a new academic cooperation framework focused on integrating Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) modules into formal university curricula, while extending collaboration across climate change education, sustainability research, international carbon markets, and the development of specialized climate professionals.
The HUSS Environmental Consortium comprises Kookmin University, Duksung Women's University, University of Ulsan, Inha University, and Chosun University, with the consolidated MoU bringing all five universities under a single cooperation framework with GORD.
GORD stated in a press release that the core of the partnership is the planned incorporation of GSAS modules into existing university curricula, creating a direct pathway for GORD-developed sustainability education to become part of South Korea's formal higher education system.
The MoU also provides for joint lectures, workshops, seminars, and the development of educational content on climate change and global carbon markets.
The statement noted that the five universities form a climate crisis consortium under South Korea's Humanities and Social Sciences Convergence Talent Program (HUSS), supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, through which they jointly develop and operate interdisciplinary curricula connecting academic learning with emerging climate, sustainability, and policy needs.
The cooperation with the HUSS consortium represents an important new stage in GORD's academic expansion, moving beyond bilateral cooperation to establish a multi-university model for incorporating GORD-developed climate programs into formal higher education through a coordinated framework. This provides a practical benchmark that can be evaluated, refined, and replicated across leading universities in East Asia.
The MoU further covers professional capacity building in Nature-based Solutions, carbon markets, Digital MRV, ESG, and climate finance, alongside exploring executive education, certification programs, and student internships at GORD.
Additionally, the agreement includes joint research on climate technologies and international carbon markets, implementing pilot projects and case studies on Nature-based Solutions and international carbon mechanisms, as well as student, researcher, and expert exchange programs.
These areas create opportunities to connect academic cooperation with industry and government institutions in both countries, including specialized climate professional programs and public-private partnership models in sustainability and carbon markets.
Commenting on the partnership, Founding Chairman of GORD Dr. Yousef Alhorr stated: "Korea's academic ecosystem provides a strong platform for developing the interdisciplinary skills needed to respond to increasingly complex climate and sustainability challenges. By integrating GORD's applied sustainability expertise into formal university education, this partnership can help connect academic learning with industry, policy and real-world implementation, while creating a model that can be expanded across the region".
For her part, Professor Yoonhee Kang of Kookmin University, representing the HUSS Environmental Consortium, said: "Preparing the next generation to respond effectively to the climate crisis requires education that extends beyond traditional academic boundaries. Through this partnership with GORD, we aim to connect interdisciplinary university education with international sustainability expertise, practical climate solutions and emerging carbon market knowledge, giving students greater opportunities to translate learning into meaningful climate action".
This partnership establishes an important new academic reference for GORD in Asia, building on over two decades of collaboration to advance sustainability education and institutional capacity.
Over past years, GORD has collaborated with leading academic institutions, including Qatar University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Kuwait University, Dhofar University, Barzan University College, and the University of Oum El Bouaghi, to integrate sustainability knowledge into higher education and strengthen the capabilities of faculty members and students.
