Washington, September 28 (QNA) – An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the island of New Caledonia in the southwestern Pacific Ocean Monday.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

New Caledonia is located in the Pacific Ocean along the "Ring of Fire", a region where tectonic plates meet and their interaction results in intense seismic and volcanic activity. (QNA)
