5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes off Japan’s Amami Islands
Tokyo, September 20 (QNA) - A magnitude-5 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Amami Oshima Islands on Sunday.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 60 kilometers. However, no tsunami warning was issued.
Japan lies at the convergence of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. The country is also home to 100 active volcanoes.
In 2011, a 9- magnitude earthquake, accompanied by a devastating tsunami, killed more than 15,000 people and caused a disaster at Fukushima nuclear power plant. (QNA)
