LoginFrance, Iraq Agree to Strengthen Military Cooperation
Paris, September 15 (QNA) - French President Emmanuel Macron and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al Zaidi agreed to strengthen military cooperation between their countries.
This came in a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the Iraqi Prime Minister's two-day visit to France.
The two sides expressed their shared vision for strengthening security and stability in the Middle East and stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and joint efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and ensure the region's security and stability. They also emphasized the importance of advancing sustainability and regional connectivity projects, diversifying export routes and supply chains to ensure regional energy security and the stability of energy transportation networks, as well as strengthening Iraq's connectivity with Europe and France.
The two sides renewed their commitment to maritime security and freedom of navigation as a fundamental principle of international law, as stipulated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. They also reiterated their commitment to and support for efforts aimed at strengthening freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
They agreed to strengthen and continue military cooperation, including developing Iraq's capabilities in border protection and supporting its sovereignty over its entire territory following the conclusion of the international coalition's mission. Such cooperation will take place within a bilateral framework that respects the sovereignty of both countries and whose terms will be agreed upon in the future. (QNA)
