Paris, September 14 (QNA) - Vincent Roberti was appointed interim president of the organizing committee for the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps on Monday, replacing Edgar Grospiron, who recently resigned amid challenges facing preparations for the Games.
The committee's extraordinary general assembly approved a temporary amendment to its bylaws allowing Roberti to combine his new position with his current role as director general until a permanent president of the organizing committee is appointed.
Roberti said he was committed to ensuring continuity in the committee's work and preparations until a new president is appointed. Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant, chair of the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission for the 2030 Games, said the appointment would ensure stability and continuity for the project.
Grospiron, a freestyle skiing champion at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, resigned about 18 months after taking over as president of the committee, amid disagreements over the organization and governance of the Games. His departure followed the resignation earlier this year of former director general Cyril Linette.
Preparations for the Games face a number of challenges, including the relocation of ice sports events from Nice to Lyon, with the exception of speedskating, which will be held in Heerenveen, the Netherlands.
The IOC Coordination Commission is scheduled to meet in Lyon on Wednesday, following its second review of preparations for the 2030 Winter Olympics. The meeting will address the final allocation of the sports and disciplines to be held in the city. (QNA)
