Login14 People Suffocate After Ammonia Gas Leak at Jordan's Aqaba Industrial Complex
Aqaba, September 14 (QNA) - Governor of Aqaba in southern Jordan, Ayman Awaysheh, said 14 individuals had been asphyxiated following a limited ammonia gas leak at the city's industrial complex Monday.
Jordan News Agency (PETRA) cited Awaysheh as saying that four cases had been hospitalized by civil defense, while the remaining cases had been treated onsite at the complex's clinics.
The accident took place during a periodic maintenance operation, with professional personnel successfully holding it in check, Awaysheh highlighted.
He noted that the appropriate authorities executed preventive evacuation measures by whisking people away to secure points within the facilities in anticipation of any developments.
For his part, Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Nidal Al Awran, said the Authority's relevant teams handled the accident in lockstep with the appropriate authorities, pursuing public safety measures and the approved emergency plan.
Al Awran assured that the situation is now entirely under control, adding that the specialized teams are finalizing safety measures to ensure the site is ready to resume operations over the upcoming phase.
He further explained that environmental and aerial readings gleaned from the site demonstrated that the air is safe, with zero pollution. (QNA)
