Geneva, September 11 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has affirmed that the right to development is a fundamental human right, noting that its recognition was enshrined in the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development in 1986.

Forty years after the declaration was adopted, Qatar said, its principles and standards continue to serve as a cornerstone for addressing many of the challenges facing the world today.

This came in a statement delivered today by Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Abdulrahman Mohammed Fakhroo during a panel discussion on the right to development held to mark the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development, under agenda item 3 of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He affirmed that, within the framework of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, promoting the right to development should remain an international and national priority, with due consideration given to the importance of implementing the development agenda in accordance with the provisions of the declaration and States' obligations under international human rights instruments.

In this regard, he said, Qatar has adopted an ambitious national vision for comprehensive development, namely Qatar National Vision 2030, and has worked to implement it through national development strategies. This has resulted in significant national achievements and steady progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, while Qatar has maintained its leading position in numerous international and regional development indicators.

At the international level, he noted, Qatar has pursued a foreign policy focused on strengthening and advancing international cooperation and solidarity, contributing to efforts to promote development across various fields.

In this context, he highlighted Qatar's hosting of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in March 2023 and the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva noted that Qatar's efforts continue through interactive solidarity, demonstrated by its provision of support to countries affected by disasters, conflicts and climate change.

He also highlighted Qatar's preventive solidarity efforts, including investment in quality education and the implementation of a range of development programs and initiatives with international partners. (QNA)
