Researchers Develop Antibodies Against Epstein-Barr Virus

Washington, September 11 (QNA) - Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington have developed novel monoclonal antibodies to prevent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and its complications.

Carried by roughly 95 percent of adults, EBV is linked to certain cancers and multiple sclerosis. The research team isolated ten antibodies targeting two key viral proteins, gp350 and gp42.

In tests on humanized mice, a gp42-targeting antibody successfully prevented infection, while a gp350 antibody offered partial protection.

Although still in preclinical stages ahead of human trials, the breakthrough offers a promising preventive avenue for immunocompromised individuals and organ transplant patients at risk of severe viral complications. (QNA)
