Montevideo, August 06 (QNA) - The Uruguayan Football Association announced today the appointment of former international striker Diego Forlan as the new head coach of the national team.

Forlan succeeds Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, who was dismissed after Uruguay's group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending three years in charge.

In addition to leading the senior national team, Forlan will also take charge of the Uruguay Under-20 team in preparation for the 2027 South American U-20 Championship, scheduled to be held in January 2027.

In a brief statement, the Uruguayan Football Association said Forlan will assume responsibility for both the Under-20 national team and the senior national team.

During his international playing career, Forlan won the 2011 Copa America with Uruguay. He is the country's third-highest all-time scorer, with 36 goals in 112 appearances, and was named Best Player at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he helped Uruguay reach the semi-finals and scored five goals.
