Gaza, August 30 (QNA) - The Gaza Strip could be plagued by an aggravated environmental disaster amid the devastation of over 80% of its water and drainage networks, warned Saeed Al Aklouk, the official responsible for water and wastewater monitoring at the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
In remarks cited by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) Sunday, Al Aklouk said water production has fallen from approximately 300,000 to 123,000 cubic meters per day, while per capita water availability has declined to between 21 and 22 liters per day.
He added that the infiltration of wastewater into the groundwater is causing higher levels of contamination, warning of grave consequences for public health and the environment, particularly amid shortages of disinfectants and limited capacity to test water quality.
Al Aklouk contended that the persistent crumbling of the water and drainage system would ominously exacerbate the humanitarian and environmental crisis in the enclave, threatening further contamination and the prevalence of health risks. (QNA)
