Ulaanbaatar, August 27 (QNA) - The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), participated in the Ministerial Dialogue on the Restoration of Rangelands and the Well-Being of Pastoral Communities, held as part of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Representing the State of Qatar at the dialogue was Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Affairs at MOECC, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Maslamani. 
In his remarks, Dr. Al Maslamani highlighted the national efforts undertaken by the State to protect and rehabilitate rangelands and restore terrestrial ecosystems, along with initiatives aimed at enhancing the sustainability of land and vegetation cover. 
He stressed that the dialogue takes on added significance in 2026, designated the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, given the environmental significance of rangelands in preserving biodiversity, promoting soil health, and increasing the resilience of ecosystems to drought and the impacts of climate change.
He pointed out that the State of Qatar has adopted an integrated approach to protecting terrestrial ecosystems and restoring degraded sites, despite the challenges associated with its arid and hyper-arid environments. He noted that protection and rehabilitation work has been carried out in 76 natural areas and sites, covering a combined area of 16.72 square kilometers, during the period from 2019 to 2026, with the aim of expanding these efforts to include 500 natural areas and sites by 2030.
He also highlighted the ongoing implementation of the initiative to plant 10 million trees by 2030 as part of the State of Qatar's contribution to the Green Middle East Initiative. To date, more than 4 million trees have been planted, supporting the restoration of ecosystems and enhancing their resilience. He further noted the Ministry's efforts in employing modern technologies to serve environmental protection, where the use of geographic information systems, remote sensing, and drones has contributed to surveying and documenting 1,573 natural areas and establishing a comprehensive national spatial database that supports sustainable planning and land use.
Dr. Al Maslamani added that national measures included extending the ban on camel grazing and regulating sheep and goat grazing during the growing seasons of wild plants. This contributes to reducing pressure on vegetation cover and allows ecosystems to regenerate naturally. He explained that these efforts are being implemented within the framework of Qatar's first National Strategy to Combat Desertification (2025-2030), which aims to restore and rehabilitate at least 30 percent of degraded natural habitats, promote sustainable land management, and achieve land degradation neutrality goals.
During the dialogue, the Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change called for enhanced international cooperation and the exchange of expertise and knowledge, particularly among countries with arid and hyper-arid environments. This would contribute to making the restoration of rangelands a development priority that supports the sustainability of natural resources and strengthens the resilience of ecosystems and communities.
