Muscat, August 15 (QNA) - No effects from the oil pollution have reached the shores of Masirah Island thus far, while the affected stretch of coastline in the Ras Madrakah area of the Wilayat of Duqm extends for about 12 km, with field operations underway to address it, the Omani Environment Authority said in a statement Saturday.

Regarding the oil slick leaking into the sea, the statement added that updated monitoring data and models indicate that it is still moving along its monitored trajectory offshore, southeast of the Wilayat of Masirah, toward the open sea, with its movement continuing to be monitored in line with marine and weather conditions.

As such, the Authority is conducting field monitoring and response in lockstep with the relevant entities to assess the developments and take the necessary measures to prevent deleterious effects on the environment and protect the marine and coastal ecosystems.

Last Wednesday, the Authority said the fallout from the incident involving the grounded oil tanker Caroline Bezengi near Qabiliyah Island in Dhofar Governorate could potentially affect the Ras Madrakah coastline with oil pollution across a stretch of up to 40 km, while the southern beaches of Masirah Island could be affected across a stretch ranging from 10 to 20 km.
