Ottawa, August 14 (QNA) - American Ben Shelton and Poland's Iga Swiatek have won the men's and women's Canadian Masters 1000 tennis titles in Montreal and Toronto, respectively.
Shelton successfully defended his Montreal title for a second consecutive year after defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 in the final.
The 23-year-old claimed his seventh ATP title and fourth of the season, adding the Montreal crown to his victories in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart. The result will also see Shelton climb from 10th to sixth in the ATP world rankings.
Shelton has now joined an elite group of players who have won the Canadian tournament in consecutive years, alongside Britain's Andy Murray, Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Spain's Rafael Nadal.
In Toronto, Swiatek secured her first title of the year with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina in the final.
The six-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 had not reached a final this season before her Toronto run. Her Wimbledon title defense ended in the third round, but she produced a dominant performance against Rybakina, the world No. 2 and reigning Australian Open champion, to claim her first Canadian title.
Swiatek's victory will propel the current world No. 8 back into the top five of the WTA rankings as she builds momentum ahead of the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the season. (QNA)
