Cairo, August 11 (QNA) - The Arab League stressed Tuesday that Colombia's declaration recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan is unacceptable.

It noted that this declaration literally has no legal effect and carries no value when it comes to either defining the character of the Golan or imposing sovereignty, contending that the Golan will always remain occupied Syrian territory based on international law and international legitimacy resolutions.

In a statement, Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy underlined that sovereignty over territories is not earned through occupation and that such sovereignty does not materialize through a political position taken by one country or another.

Fahmy further stressed that the legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan is more entrenched than changes in governments or their political positions.

UN Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981 has already resolved this matter, and any imposition of Israeli laws and administrative measures on the Golan would be definitively void and null and have no international legal effect, Fahmy noted.

He confirmed that political positions, whatever their sources, remain impotent to create legitimacy for the occupation, whether by altering borders or establishing rights over the territories of others.

Fahmy urged the Colombian government to backtrack and rectify its stance in alignment with the provisions of international law, UN resolutions and the established international position on the status of the occupied Syrian Golan.

The League, Fahmy assured, will unwaveringly continue supporting Syria's sovereignty over the Golan and would deem any measures or positions that legitimize the Israeli occupation a non-starter. (QNA)
