Doha, June 08 (QNA) - Throughout its rich history, the FIFA World Cup has been far more than a competition for football's most coveted trophy.

It has served as the sport's grandest stage, producing generations of stars whose performances transformed them into global icons and immortalized their names in football history.

From Pele, who announced himself to the world as a 17-year-old and led Brazil to its first world title in 1958, to Diego Maradona, whose brilliance inspired Argentina's triumph in 1986, the World Cup has consistently been the birthplace of footballing greatness. In the modern era, stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi further enhanced their legendary status through unforgettable World Cup moments.

The tournament has also provided a platform for Arab footballers to leave their mark on the global stage.

Among the most notable names are Rabah Madjer, Ahmed Radhi, Saeed Al Owairan, Sami Al Jaber, and Ali Kaabi, who scored the first-ever Arab goal in World Cup history in 1978.

Their achievements helped strengthen Arab football's presence on the world stage and created enduring memories for generations of fans.

Across successive editions, the World Cup has introduced a remarkable array of talents. Socrates symbolized Brazil's celebrated 1982 side, while Roger Milla inspired Cameroon's historic run to the quarterfinals in 1990.

The tournament also elevated figures such as Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane, and Ronaldinho, whose performances became defining moments in World Cup history.

In more recent years, James Rodriguez captured global attention with his outstanding displays in 2014, while Kylian Mbappe emerged as one of football's brightest stars after playing a key role in France's 2018 triumph.

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, rising talents including Enzo Fernandez, Josko Gvardiol, and Aurelien Tchouameni confirmed that the tournament remains football's premier showcase for emerging talent.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, attention is turning to a new generation of players hoping to announce themselves on the sport's biggest stage.

As it has done throughout its history, the World Cup is expected to unveil new stars, shape careers, and add fresh chapters to its enduring legacy of creating football legends.

More than a championship, the World Cup remains a global stage where talent meets opportunity, careers are defined, and football history is written. (QNA)
