Death Toll from Caracas Earthquakes Rises to More Than 1,400
Caracas, June 27 (QNA) - The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Caracas and surrounding areas on Wednesday has risen to 1,430, President of the National Assembly of Venezuela Jorge Rodriguez said on Saturday.
Speaking on Venezuelan state TV, Rodriguez said 3,200 people had been injured, while 3,100 others had been left homeless by the disaster.
The United Nations said on Friday that more than 50,000 people remained missing, adding that rescue teams from at least 17 countries had been deployed to search for survivors. Venezuelan authorities have declared a nationwide state of emergency.
The two earthquakes were among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century. Numerous buildings were evacuated in the affected areas, and aftershocks were felt as far away as Brazil's Amazon region. (QNA)
