Antalya/Turkiye, June 20 (QNA) - Qatar's first men's basketball team have concluded their overseas training camp in Antalya, Turkey, held from June 11 to 20, as part of the preparation programme established by the Qatar Basketball Federation ahead of a busy international schedule, including the continuation of the Asian and Oceania qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.
The camp represented an important stage in Qatar's preparations, with head coach Hakan Demir overseeing a comprehensive training programme designed to enhance the players' physical and technical readiness, strengthen team chemistry, and evaluate tactical options ahead of a series of crucial competitive fixtures in the coming weeks.
Throughout the camp, the squad underwent intensive daily training sessions focused on improving fitness levels, refining technical skills, and implementing a variety of offensive and defensive systems that the coaching staff intend to utilise during the qualification campaign. The programme also addressed technical areas identified during previous matches to ensure the team are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
The training camp formed part of the federation's broader strategy to maintain the strong level of performance demonstrated by the national team throughout the qualifiers. Qatar have produced several impressive results during the campaign, highlighting the continued development of the country's basketball programme and their ability to compete with some of Asia's leading teams.
Qatar opened their qualification campaign with a narrow 75-74 defeat to Lebanon in Doha before producing one of their most significant results in recent years by defeating the Lebanese side 86-83 in Beirut. The victory provided a major confidence boost for the squad and underlined their ability to secure important results away from home against established continental rivals.
The team continued their strong form with a convincing 99-73 victory over India in Doha, further strengthening their position in the race for qualification and reinforcing confidence ahead of the next phase of the campaign.
Upon returning to Doha, Qatar will immediately begin the next stage of their preparations with two friendly matches against Tunisia on June 23 and 25 at Al Gharafa Hall. The coaching staff will use the fixtures to provide players with additional game time and valuable international experience while fine-tuning preparations for the upcoming official competitions.
Qatar will then face Saudi Arabia on June 29 at Al Gharafa Hall in a postponed game from the second qualifying window before travelling to Ahmedabad, India, to take on India on July 2 as part of the third qualifying window. They will conclude this phase of the campaign with another meeting against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on July 5, a match that could prove decisive in the battle for top spot in Group D.
The upcoming fixtures carry added significance given the tight standings in Group D. Qatar, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia are currently tied at the top of the group with five points each, while India sit fourth with three points, leaving qualification and group leadership very much open heading into the decisive rounds of competition.
