Extraordinary Heatwave Prompts France to Declare Maximum Alert in 35 Departments
Paris, June 20 (QNA) - France's weather service issued on Saturday a red alert, the highest level in the country, warning of a heatwave affecting 35 French departments starting Sunday, June 21.
The agency noted that the number of red heatwave warnings is a record, with the previous record being 20 departments on July 24 and 25, 2019.
In its bulletin today, it asserted that extremely high temperatures will continue for a long period across the country, while placing another 45 departments on orange alert.
The red alert covers a large swath of central and western France starting from midday Sunday.
The heatwave warning system was established in 2004, following the 2003 heatwave in France that caused the death of nearly 15,000 people. (QNA)
