Nikkei Closes at New Record High
Tokyo, June 17 (QNA) - Japan's Nikkei closed at a new record high on Wednesday for the third consecutive session, approaching the 70,000-point mark, supported by continued momentum in artificial intelligence-related shares ahead of the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision.
The index rose 0.7 percent to close at 69,902.25 after touching an intraday high of 70,125.75, while the broader Topix index gained 0.6 percent to 4,013.23.
Market performance remained positive, with 137 stocks advancing and 85 declining within the Nikkei index.
Technology and artificial intelligence shares posted strong gains. Shares of chip-testing equipment maker Lasertec jumped 13.2 percent to close at a record high. Murata Manufacturing rose 3.2 percent, while Yaskawa Electric gained 2.9 percent.
Meanwhile, some heavyweight stocks declined, with T&D Holdings falling 3.2 percent, SoftBank Group dropping 3.1 percent, and Olympus losing 3.0 percent. (QNA)
