Doha, May 23 (QNA) - The Symposium on the History of Science in Islamic Civilization, stemming from the International Conference on Orientalism, commenced on Saturday. Organized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, in collaboration with the Islam and Muslims Initiative, the symposium will continue for two days.
The opening ceremony was attended by HE Minister of Education and Higher Education Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed Al Khater and HE Undersecretary of the Ministry Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi along with senior education officials, a distinguished group of scholars, researchers, academics, and other interested parties from Qatar and beyond, as well as several ambassadors of Arab and Islamic countries accredited to the State of Qatar.
Participants emphasized the importance of reviving the Arab and Islamic scientific heritage and highlighting the contributions of Muslim scholars to the progress of human civilization. They stressed that studying the history of science provides a gateway to understanding the development of scientific knowledge and drawing inspiration for building the future, in addition to its role in strengthening cultural identity and reinforcing confidence in the nation's ability to contribute to scientific and intellectual advancement.
The speakers emphasized that modern studies in the history of science have moved beyond the traditional approach of simply invoking the past, becoming a multidisciplinary field of research that connects science with social, cultural, and intellectual contexts, benefiting from modern digital transformations in indexing and scientific analysis.
The symposium opened with a speech by head of the symposium's scientific committee Prof. Mahmoud Al-hamza who welcomed the attendees and expressed his gratitude to the researchers for their valuable participation, hoping that the symposium would achieve its desired objectives.
This was followed by the keynote lecture delivered by the distinguished historian, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, on new trends in the study of the history of Islamic science.
The symposium's proceedings were divided into two academic tracks, which included intensive academic sessions on: The history of science and Islamic scientific thought, networks of transmission of ideas and sciences to and from the Islamic world and concluded with a session on the history of medicine in Islamic civilization.
The second track was designed for the public to simplify the learning outcomes. It included a panel discussion titled "The duality of religion and science," as well as an open dialogue with educational consultant and thinker Dr. Ibrahim Al Khalifi.
The first day of the symposium concluded its activities in the main theater of the Doha International Book Fair with an open discussion moderated by Dr. Fella Lahmar with Dr. Shoaib Malik about his book, "Seven Classical Perspectives for Islam and Science." The discussion was well-attended with significant interaction from interested individuals and visitors to the fair.
The symposium will continue tomorrow to cover additional topics including mathematics, astronomy, and the philosophy of science, amidst widespread interest in its anticipated outcomes. (QNA)
