Doha International Book Fair Highlights UN Role, Future Challenges
Doha, May 20 (QNA) - The cultural salon at the 35th Doha International Book Fair hosted HE President of the 66th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and former High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser to talk about his last book "A Year at the Helm of the United Nations General Assembly: A Vision for our Century."
In his remarks to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), HE Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser stated that during his participation in the Cultural Salon, he addressed his experience during his presidency of the UNGA, and the international and regional challenges and transformations that accompanied it. He indicated that the book deals with the four pillars that he worked on during that period, which include mediation, disasters, climate, and sustainable development, in addition to efforts to improve the performance of the United Nations, considering that this experience formed a comprehensive vision for the twenty-first century, despite the great challenges it faced.
The dialogue also addressed the circumstances that the Arab region was going through at that time, and what was known as the "Arab Spring," and the resulting political and social transformations in a number of Arab countries, in addition to the people's demands for justice, human rights, good governance, and a decent life.
His Excellency noted that the discussion about the book was rich and inspiring, stressing that there was not enough time to address all the issues included in the publication, voicing his hope to continue raising these topics in future sessions.
Published by Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press, the 205-page volume features a foreword by former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and a translation by Atef Othman. The book is divided into six comprehensive chapters: "A Vision for Universal Values," "The Peaceful Settlement of Disputes," "UN Reform and Revitalization," "Natural Disaster Prevention and Response," "Sustainable Development and Global Prosperity," and "Challenges to Human Security."
