Qatar's Mutaz Barshim Wins Gold Medal at Asian Jumps Championships in China
Beijing, May 20 (QNA) - Qatari Olympic and world high jump champion, Mutaz Barshim, won the gold medal on Tuesday at the Asian Jumps Championships in Chongqing, China, which featured some of the continent's top athletes in jumping events.
Barshim cleared 2.23 meters, his best mark of the current season, after previously winning gold at the GCC Games in Doha with a jump of 2.16 meters.
The Qatari Olympic champion, who has won four Olympic medals — gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, silver at the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics — had little difficulty improving his personal best for the 2026 season following his return to competition after a two-year absence because of injury.
Barshim previously achieved a historic hat trick that cemented his status at the pinnacle of the high jump, winning three consecutive world championship titles — in London in 2017, Doha in 2019, and Eugene in 2022.
His extensive medal haul also includes a silver medal from the 2013 world championships in Moscow and a bronze from the 2023 championships in Budapest.
He holds the second-highest jump in history, a mark of 2.43 meters, which he set in Brussels in 2014.
Barshim is scheduled to compete in the men’s high jump at the Doha Diamond League meeting on June 19. (QNA)
