Geneva, May 17 (QNA) - The State of Qatar is set to take part in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA 79), which will take place from May 18–23, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland, alongside a number of meetings and associated events.
The State of Qatar's delegation is headed by HE Minister of Public Health Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud.
The State of Qatar will organize the event that convenes alongside the WHA meetings on "Healthy Longevity as a Lifelong Investment Strategy: Integrating Determinants, Prevention, Primary Care, and Sustainable Financing" on Tuesday, with broad participation of countries and relevant international organizations.
Convened under the theme "Reshaping Global Health: A Shared Responsibility", the meetings are intended to drill down on an array of consequential matters, foremost of which is follow-up of Political Declaration of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, universal health coverage, and the draft updated global action plan on antimicrobial resistance.
In addition, the meetings will debate the health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan.
Participants are set to address preparedness and plans for public health contingencies, as well as boost rehabilitation in health systems and welfare.
Broadly speaking, WHA is a decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO) in which delegations from all Member States participate.
Its key functions entail the identification of WHO policies, appointing the Director-General, overseeing financial policies, in addition to reviewing the proposed program budget and approving it.
The delegation of the State of Qatar had taken part in the meeting of the Programme, Budget and Administration Committee of the Executive Board of WHO convened from May 13 to 15. The delegation is likewise set to participate in the meetings of the 157th session of the Executive Board from May 25–26 in Geneva.
The key purviews of this board lie in enforcing WHA policies and decisions, as well as providing counsel and facilitating its functions. (QNA)
