UN Warns of Famine Risk for 20 Million in Sudan
Rome, May 15 (QNA) - The United Nations warned on Friday that Sudan's worsening hunger crisis could turn into a major catastrophe without urgent international action, with around 20 million people facing acute food insecurity.
In a joint statement, the FAO, World Food Program (WFP), and UNICEF said about 19.5 million people, two in every five Sudanese, are experiencing critical hunger levels.
Citing the latest IPC report, the agencies said ongoing conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 11 million people.
WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain urged urgent global action, warning that hunger and malnutrition are endangering millions.
The report said 14 areas in Darfur and South Kordofan face famine risk, while 135,000 people are already in catastrophic hunger.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell warned that severely malnourished children are arriving in critical condition, with about 825,000 children under five expected to suffer acute malnutrition in 2026.
The UN added that rising food, fuel, and fertilizer prices are worsening the crisis. (QNA)
