United Nations Condemns Drone Attack on Aid Truck in North Darfur
New York, April 28 (QNA) - The United Nations has condemned an attack on an aid truck in Sudan's North Darfur State.
Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the United Nations, said in a statement that a truck belonging to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was targeted by a drone on Friday as it passed through the town of Um Drisaye. The vehicle was transporting emergency shelter materials.
The truck was en route to the town of Tawila, which has become a refuge for approximately 700,000 people fleeing fighting in other parts of the country. Dujarric noted that the cargo was entirely destroyed by a fire that broke out following the strike.
Despite the attack, Dujarric emphasized that the agency would continue its operations to reach the displaced, including nearly nine million people internally displaced within Sudan and more than 860,000 who have crossed into neighboring countries. He reiterated that civilian infrastructure and noncombatants must never be targeted and that all parties to the conflict must ensure rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access.
Dujarric also pointed to a recent assessment by UN partners highlighting a deteriorating humanitarian situation across displacement sites in Blue Nile State. The decline is attributed to overcrowding, inadequate shelter, poor sanitation, and the escalating risk of gender-based violence. (QNA)
