Sanya, April 21 (QNA) - The 6th Asian Beach Games officially open tomorrow, Wednesday, in Sanya, Hainan Province, China.

The Games will feature 1,790 athletes representing 45 Asian National Olympic Committees and will run until April 30. Competitions will be held in 14 sports, 15 disciplines, and 62 events.

The Asian Beach Games are one of six multi-sport events organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), alongside the Asian Games (Asiad), the Asian Winter Games, the Asian Youth Games, and the Asian Indoor and Mixed Martial Arts Games.

The Games aim to promote beach sports, provide a competitive platform for athletes, support cultural exchange among participating nations, and reinforce the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect, all within the unique sporting and touristic atmosphere of the host city.

The opening ceremony of the Asian Beach Games at Yasha Park Theatre tomorrow (Wednesday) will blend Asian spirit, Chinese characteristics, the charm of Hainan, and the unique coastal character of Sanya.

HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), expressed his confidence in Sanya's success in organizing the Games, saying that the OCA was confident that Sanya would provide the ideal environment for our sixth edition of the popular Asian Beach Games.

Qatar is participating with a delegation of 34 athletes. The Qatari delegation has high hopes for its athletes to achieve outstanding results and compete strongly for medals, reflecting the level of development in Qatari sports and enhancing its presence at this continental event.

The country will be competing in a total of seven sports. The participation reflects Qatar's constant presence in Asian Beach Games since its inception. The highlight of that was winning a gold medal in Handball.

Achievements continued at the Phuket 2014 edition, where Qatar won 12 medals (two gold, two silver, and eight bronze), and seven medals at the Da Nang 2016 edition (five gold, one silver, and one bronze), reflecting the ongoing presence of Qatari sports at these Games. (QNA)
