France Intends to Deploy Anti-missile Systems in Northern Cyprus
Paris, March 3 (QNA) - France intends to deploy anti-missile and anti-drone defense systems in Northern Cyprus, following the Iranian attack that targeted a British base on the Mediterranean island.
Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the agreement on French assistance, which includes a frigate equipped with anti-missile and anti-drone systems, has been finalized.
He noted that Greece had sent two frigates and F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus, while several other countries intend to provide support to the island.
He emphasized that his country has not and will not participate in any military operation, stressing that its role is limited to providing purely humanitarian assistance.
A British airbase in Northern Cyprus was targeted on Monday by an Iranian drone, hours after London granted Washington permission to use its military bases against Tehran. Two other drones heading towards the island were intercepted later that same day.
The attack on the British base at Akrotiri marked the first attack on an EU member state since the start of the war in the Middle East, which was sparked by US-Israeli strikes against Iran last Saturday.
Following the attack, Cyprus announced that it had requested assurances that the use of British bases on its territories would be limited to humanitarian purposes. (QNA)
