Cairo, March 29 (QNA) - The Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, during its 165th ordinary session held today via videoconferencing, unanimously approved the nomination of Ambassador Nabil Fahmy, the Arab Republic of Egypt's candidate, for the position of Secretary-General of the League to succeed the current Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term ends in June.

Official Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Jamal Rushdi, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the meeting resulted in a recommendation to this effect, which will be submitted to Arab leaders for endorsement at the upcoming Arab Summit.

Regarding the agenda of the session, Rushdi noted that discussions focused on developments related to the Iranian file, particularly Iran's attacks against several Arab states. A declaration was adopted reflecting a unified Arab position that firmly rejects and condemns these attacks, while affirming full solidarity with the targeted Arab countries and rejecting any justifications or pretexts used to excuse or legitimize actions that violate state sovereignty.

He added that Arab foreign ministers also referred to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which received broad support from over 136 UN member states. The resolution includes a clear condemnation of Iranian actions infringing on the sovereignty of several Arab countries, as well as an explicit rejection of Tehran's policies concerning the closure of maritime passages, such as the Strait of Hormuz, or the obstruction of international navigation, considering these actions a direct threat to international peace and security.
