OIC Condemns Colombia's Opening of Embassy in Occupied Jerusalem
Jeddah, October 14 (QNA) - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned Colombia's opening of an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, describing the move as a violation of international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, OIC Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said the decision contravened Security Council Resolution 478, adopted in 1980, which called on countries to withdraw their diplomatic missions from Jerusalem and declared Israel's measures to alter the city's character and status null and void.
The OIC rejected any positions or actions that it said would entrench Israel's occupation, legitimize its claimed sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem or undermine international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution.
The secretary-general said he had sent a letter to Colombia's foreign minister urging the government to reverse its decision.
He said the move supported Israeli measures aimed at changing Jerusalem's character, legal status and demographic composition, while undermining the rights of the Palestinian people.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed also highlighted Jerusalem's religious and historical significance to Muslims and Christians worldwide.
He warned that the decision could have long-term consequences for Colombia's relations with countries across the Muslim world. (QNA)
