UN Warns of Continued Civilian Killings in Gaza Due to Israeli Attacks
Gaza, January 23 (QNA) - The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory warned today of the continued killing of civilians in Gaza due to Israeli attacks, within the context of a broader pattern of violence that has persisted since the ceasefire, and amidst the lingering effects of two years of devastation.
In a statement, Director of the UN Office, Ajith Sungai stressed that the international community must intensify its support and pressure to stop the bloodshed and promote a human rights-based approach to recovery and reconstruction. He noted that the crisis in Gaza is far from over, especially as people are dying daily, whether from Israeli attacks or due to continued Israeli restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid, particularly shelter, which has led to deaths from the cold and building collapses.
He noted that at least 216 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire until January 21, including at least 46 children and 28 women, in Israeli attacks that took place far from the so-called "yellow line," primarily targeting shelters for displaced people and residential buildings, in addition to the killing of at least 167 Palestinians in the vicinity of the "yellow line," including 26 children and 17 women.
