EU Condemns Israeli Raid on UNRWA Offices in East Jerusalem
Brussels, January 22 (QNA) - The European Union has condemned Israeli occupation's raid on the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, in East Jerusalem, describing it as a "serious attack" on the United Nations and a violation of Israel's international obligations.
In a statement on Wednesday, the EU said it remained a strong supporter of the UN, stressing that UNRWA is an integral part of the organization. It reaffirmed its commitment to multi-lateralism based on international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
The EU pointed to the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, which requires member states to protect UN premises and respect their inviolability.
It added that UN agencies play a vital role in maintaining global security and upholding fundamental human rights, and confirmed that the EU would continue its political and financial support for UNRWA, which provides humanitarian aid, education and health services in the occupied Palestinian territories.
UNRWA and other UN bodies have repeatedly come under pressure from Israeli occupation authorities in recent years, with Israel carrying out actions widely criticized as violations of international law. (QNA)
